VISIT TO THE FLOOR OF THE SIENA CATHEDRAL
The Duomo of Siena is considered one of the city’s main attractions and one of the most important Gothic churches in Italy. That’s why we always recommend…
A VISIT TO THE FLOOR OF THE SIENA CATHEDRAL
There are many reasons to visit it, but the time of year when the mosaic marble floor is uncovered is truly a must-see.
This year, the Siena Cathedral floor will be open:
from June 27th, 2023 to July 31st, 2023
and
from August 18th, 2023 to October 18th, 2023
For liturgical and conservation reasons, it remains partially covered during the rest of the year.
Why is the floor of the Siena Cathedral so famous?
Described by Vasari as “the most beautiful… grand and magnificent”, the mosaics that make up the floor are truly one of a kind—not only for the techniques used to create them, but also for the message they convey. Many of the panels reflect humanity’s continuous search for Knowledge and Faith.
Created between 1369 and 1547, the floor of Siena Cathedral consists of 56 scenes crafted in marble mosaic by some of the greatest Sienese artists, such as Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo, Matteo di Giovanni, and Domenico Beccafumi.
It is as vast as it is complex, having taken centuries to complete. In fact, the floor was only finished in the 19th century, over 600 years after its initial design.
Borgo Grondaie Siena recommends not missing the view of the Cathedral’s floor from its rooftops. In fact, there’s a new tour inside the Cathedral that allows visitors to admire the mosaic floor from above. It’s called “LA PORTA DEL CIELO” (“The Gate of Heaven”) and it’s absolutely worth a visit!
This area of the Cathedral — the upper part of the church — was closed for several centuries and is now finally open to the public. When visitors reach the Gate of Heaven, they have the unique opportunity to walk above the Cathedral’s naves, explore the roof, admire the stunning interior from above, and at the same time enjoy a panoramic view of Siena from the front façade and the right side of the building.
