In Siena, Christmas celebrations start early!
THE MARKET OF PIAZZA DEL CAMPO IN SIENA is an event you don’t want to miss.
On Saturday, December 3rd, and Sunday, December 4th, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Piazza del Campo in Siena will host the Mercato del Campo, a unique event that combines history and tradition, all immersed in a festive Christmas atmosphere.
Why is it called the Mercato del Campo in Siena?
Because it takes place in the beautiful Piazza del Campo in Siena, and it is exactly like the weekly market that the citizens of the Republic of Siena participated in during the 14th century, as well as the pilgrims and travelers passing through the Via Francigena.
There will be no characters in costumes, but plenty of stalls where you can taste and purchase high-quality local products.
From Chianti wines and Val d’Orcia wines, to the new olive oil from our hills, cheeses (the famous Pecorino from Pienza), Cinta pork cold cuts, and finally, the Christmas sweets of Siena.
Have you ever tasted them? Well, this could be a great opportunity. Siena has a long tradition of ancient sweets, all made according to medieval recipes, from Panforte to Ricciarelli, Panpepato, and the more well-known Cantucci.
There will also be stalls with high-quality handcrafted items. From handmade jewelry, to decorated balls in the colors of the contrade, Sienese ceramics, and leather goods. Plenty of ideas for your gifts, and definitely unique and original!
To liven up the Mercato del Campo in Siena, there will be fire shows that will make the atmosphere even more enchanting at dusk, along with jugglers and stilt walkers.
On the Mercato del Campo di Siena website, you will find the complete program for the two days.
Our recommendation: on Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the State Archive will also be open, and you will have the chance to see a unique collection: THE BICCHERNE.
These are the accounting books of Siena from the 14th century. Absolutely not to be missed!
