How much does the tourist tax cost?

If you’re planning your vacation, it’s important to know how much the tourist tax will affect the hotel you’ve chosen. How much does the tourist tax cost? How is it calculated?

Knowing the amount of the tourist tax in advance is important, especially to avoid any unpleasant surprises at check-out.

What is the Tourist Tax?
It is a local tax that was introduced in Italy starting from 2011. It is applied not only to hotels but also to vacation homes, campsites, residences, and agriturismos, both in the countryside and in cities.
The cost of the tourist tax varies depending on the type of tourist facility and its classification (for hotels, the stars are used). This means that by booking a 3-star hotel, the tourist tax will be lower than booking a 5-star hotel.

How much does the tourist tax cost in Siena?

In Siena, the tourist tax varies based on the season:

  • Low Season runs from November 1st to February 28th.

  • High Season runs from March 1st to October 31st.

Borgo Grondaie is a 3-star hotel, so the tourist tax at our property will cost:

  • Low season: €1.50 per person per day.

  • High season: €2.50 per person per day.

Are there discounts for families with children?

Sure! In Siena, children under 12 years old do not pay the tourist tax. So, if you’re a family of 4 with 2 children under 12, the tax will only be applied to 2 adults.

Save on the tax if you stay longer!

The tourist tax in Siena is applied for a maximum of 6 nights of stay in the same month. This means that if you go on vacation for 10 days within the same month, 4 nights will be exempt!

Who is exempt from paying the tourist tax?

  • Children under 12 years old

  • Those who come to Siena for medical treatments

  • Those who assist patients hospitalized in the city’s healthcare facilities

  • Parents of children hospitalized in healthcare facilities (both parents are exempt)

  • People with disabilities

  • Bus drivers and tour guides

  • Residents of the Municipality of Siena

  • Firefighters and law enforcement personnel engaged in special events in Siena

  • University students from the University of Siena enrolled in Master’s programs and para-university courses

If you believe you are entitled to an exemption from the tourist tax, please request the special form at the Reception.

To conclude, let’s explain why many hotels still ask for the tourist tax to be paid in cash. Since this is not collected by the hotel but must be periodically paid to the Municipality of Siena, many booking systems are not equipped for this dual administration. Even at Borgo Grondaie, we ask for payment in cash, but if the guest is unable to provide it, we can easily charge it to the credit card.
