It happens to everyone, at least once in life, to leave something behind in a hotel. It’s normal… we’re always in a rush, and something can slip through the cracks.
The important thing is to realize it… better sooner than later!
How to retrieve forgotten items in a hotel?
It becomes very simple if you notice it right after leaving the hotel.
The first thing to do is to call because this way, the item can be immediately retrieved from the room and brought to the reception. If you’re not too far away, you can take advantage of the chance to go back and pick it up… if it’s not too late!
If you realize it after you’ve already returned home, it’s best to send an email to the hotel explaining exactly what happened.
What is important to communicate:

Full name (so they can trace the reservation and the room occupied)

If you know the room number, it’s helpful to mention it

Stay period (from… to…)

Type of item, describing its color and size
-
Address for shipping
-
Phone number
This is very helpful to quickly locate the item and arrange for its shipment to the customer.
At Borgo Grondaie Siena, we have a very careful lost and found management system.
When the housekeepers hand over an item to us, it is immediately registered with the date, the customer’s name, the type of item, and the room number where it was found.
Therefore, when the customer calls, it’s easy to immediately know if the item has been found.
Each item is placed in a locked storage while awaiting pickup by its owner.
Not everyone, however, is as attentive to the items they leave behind in hotels, and it often happens that these items are never requested back. In one year, we accumulate so many objects of all kinds that we could open a shop!
The law states that hoteliers are required to keep lost items for a maximum of 90 days. At Borgo Grondaie, we keep them for over a year, after which, if never requested, they are donated to the local charities of Siena.

A dental prosthesis, which, by the way, was never requested!
And then there’s our Trudi Teddy Bear, who has been waiting for his mom for over a year. A little girl left him in 2021, and despite several appeals, even on Instagram, we still haven’t been able to find her.
We wait hopefully and have become quite fond of the teddy bear, keeping him safe while awaiting his owner, but make sure to look carefully, and I mean really carefully, everywhere before you leave the hotel!!
