Natural hot springs near Siena

Where to find Natural Hot Springs near Siena?

The area around Siena has always been known for its thermal waters. Just a few kilometers from the city, you’ll find several well-equipped facilities with pools and wellness centers. These are great for those looking for all the comforts, but they are often very crowded and chaotic.

If you’re looking for a different experience, one of total relaxation in contact with nature, we recommend following us on this journey to discover the Natural Hot Springs near Siena that are located along the rivers.

There are several near Siena, but the one we prefer is located in Bagni San Filippo.

Bagni San Filippo

It’s a small village in the south of Tuscany, nestled between the Val d’Orcia and Monte Amiata, and it’s only a little over an hour away from Siena, passing through Cassia, an ancient road where the Crete Senesi dominate the landscape.

The small village of Bagni San Filippo has fewer than 100 inhabitants, and thanks to its particular geographical location, the place has managed to retain its natural and wild appearance.

Since ancient times, it has been known for its warm thermal waters, which have created a magical landscape of white limestone formations, small waterfalls, and hot pools where you can bathe, all surrounded by lush green woods.

In one of the pools within the park, you can admire a White Whale, but not the one you’re thinking of! The Cascata, so named for its resemblance to the mouth of a whale, is the most striking limestone formation in Fosso Bianco. Here, the hottest waters flow at 48°C from a nearby spring, ensuring a temperature high enough to allow bathing even off-season.

The quantity and flow of the water descending from the waterfall change quite frequently, quickly transforming the landscape with new shapes and colors. In fact, especially in the winter period, the thermal waters mix with rainwater rich in organic or mineral material, which, when deposited with the limestone, creates color variations in green or reddish-brown hues.

On the bottom of the pools, precious thermal mud settles, which is typically used for skin treatments, as well as for the face and body.

Fosso bianco

Access to the entire Fosso Bianco area is free.

The area is quite extensive, and you can already find the first pools along the road, where the waters are clear and very warm, but in small quantities, just enough to keep the pools lukewarm. Continuing along the main road and then following the path that runs along the stream, you will reach the Cascata della Balena.

Heading further downhill, you will come near the thermal facility where the abundant waters of the pool are released into the Fosso Bianco, increasing its temperature.

The Natural Hot Springs of Bagni San Filippo, near Siena, are open all year round, but we recommend visiting in spring or autumn, when the milder external temperature blends well with the warmth of the waters. Additionally, in the summer, due to the water shortage, the thermal pools are greatly reduced and may become overcrowded.

A day at the Natural Hot Springs requires a good spirit of adventure!

At Borgo Grondaie, we can assist you, not only with information on how to get there, but also by organizing a Picnic Lunch so you can fully enjoy your day of relaxation.
