Where to park for free in Siena

If you’re arriving in Siena by car, the first thing to do is understand how to get around and know where the parking areas are, because in Siena not all parking is accessible and especially not free.

WHERE TO PARK FOR FREE IN SIENA?

Ztl

Like all art cities, Siena has a ZTL (limited traffic zone) that covers the entire historic center. This means it’s impossible to drive into or park in Piazza del Campo unless you have a special permit or take an authorized taxi.

But don’t worry… distances in Siena are quite short, so leaving your car outside the city walls just means enjoying a pleasant 10-minute walk to the center.

To give you an idea: Borgo Grondaie is only 1.5 km from Piazza del Campo, so by parking your car in our private parking area, you can easily reach the city center on foot in about 20 minutes.

Siena Parcheggi

To reach the monuments in Siena’s historic center more quickly and comfortably (some are even equipped with escalators), you can park your car in the multi-level parking lots located near the city gates:

  • Porta Tufi – Il Campo Parking

  • Porta di Fontebranda – Santa Caterina Parking – escalators leading near the Duomo

  • Porta Ovile – San Francesco Parking – escalators that bring you right in front of the Church of San Francesco

  • Porta San Marco – Il Duomo Parking

Scale Mobili

However, this top-level service comes at a price and quite a high one: €2.00 per hour.

Other paid parking options are located near the Stadium area (which also serves as a parking lot when no sports events are scheduled), Fortezza Medicea, and along Via di San Prospero (the street leading to the Stadium). Always check if there are any matches scheduled on the day you plan to visit Siena, because if there are, the entire area becomes off-limits.

Parcheggi

If you plan to spend a whole day in Siena, paid parking can become quite an expense! That’s why we, as true locals, want to recommend a few lesser-known parking areas where you can leave your car safely and without risking fines.

WHERE TO PARK FOR FREE IN SIENA

  • Just 800 meters from Piazza del Campo, you’ll find Porta Laterina Parking, accessible via Porta San Marco.

  • Along one side of the Fortezza Medicea, there’s the Campino parking lot – fairly large and very close to the city center.

  • Along the outer walls near Porta Camollia (via Don Minzoni), and

  • San Prospero parking just before the small bar on the right – it’s small but incredibly convenient.

THE TRAIN STATION PARKING LOT (not the one at the Porta Siena shopping center) is underground and costs only €2 per day. From there, you can reach the center on foot or by public transport.

Parcheggio stazione

If you choose to park along the street, pay close attention to the signs! Some parking spots in Siena are marked with blue lines, which might look like paid parking, but are actually reserved for residents (ARU zones). Parking there requires a special permit to be displayed.

That said, the parking issue is easily solved by parking outside the city walls, even just a bit farther out, and using public transportation if needed.

Unlike many hotels in the city center that don’t offer parking, Borgo Grondaie Siena provides a spacious private parking area and the chance to reach the city center either by public transport or on foot in just 20 minutes.
